How to Beat Procrastination

The Center’s newest advisory board member, Dan Ariely, offers up a few tips for getting the best of procrastination.  A couple of interesting points:

  • In a survey of 3000 online visitors, Dan found that the top three behaviors we’re most likely to put off are diet, exercise and evaluation of our retirement plans.  Human Resource executives feel this challenge every day.
  • The tips include self-binding (a la stickk.com), creating accountability (e.g., hiring a trainer), and telescoping future benefits or costs into the present (e.g., putting mirrors around the house).  Each of these approaches involves a conscious decision to alter the payoff landscape at the point of decision making about the desired behavior.
